Acoustic guitar is such a versatile instrument.

It can be played without amplification almost anywhere
or can be plugged in for larger audiences.
I personally play an acoustic more than electric most of the time.
There's no faking it on an acoustic, it's just you and the guitar!
The better each are, the better it should sound.

There are 2 basic differences between acoustic guitars:
Steel string and Nylon string.

Steel string are more common and can be used for most any type of music, usually played with a pick, whereas, nylon string guitars are mainly used for classical or spanish styles using the fingers or nails to pluck the strings.  Both can be done on either. Nylon string guitars may be a little easier on the fingers but the necks also tend to be wider.  It is always advised to practice on a guitar matched to the player's physical abilities and their stylistic preferences in order to get the most enjoyable results.

I usually play a steel string acoustic guitar with a pick.
